M2D Design Group has won a KYALSA Professional Merit Award for The BCTC Newtown Pike Campus Master Plan

The BCTC Newtown Pike Master Plan project entails the repurposing of the 65 acre Eastern State Hospital Campus for the use as the newest Bluegrass Community & Technical College Campus. Due to the site being one of the oldest continually operating mental health facilities in the United States, the transformation of this site poses many challenges for the design team. To help address many of these issues, the design team collaborated with several influential community groups to address the historic and sensitive nature of this site. Additionally, the scope of the project includes assessment of existing buildings, academic planning, traffic, as well as pedestrian evaluations.

Balance between the urban environment and a campus setting is essential. The design team places high priority on creating a multi-modal campus that will connect with the city. The traditional campus model incorporates the urban setting, contributing to a distinct sense of place. The strong center axes create a walkable campus core that is directly connected to the community. A new entrance and parking will provide an important amenity for the many future commuters.

Sustainability is also a major consideration for the new campus. Permeable parking and a large bioswale contribute to the overall stormwater management. Preserving many of the mature trees located around the historic entrance and the addition of many new trees will contribute to the overall “green” nature of the campus as well as help support the city of Lexington’s goals to become a more sustainable community.
